Advent is about “the coming” of Jesus to the Earth. The questions that is begging to be asked and answered is “Why?” “Why did Jesus come to the Earth?” “What was His motivation?” “What was His emotional response to coming?” “Why did Jesus come to the Earth?”
JESUS CAME BECAUSE OF WHO WE ARE & JESUS CAME BECAUSE OF WHO GOD IS.
WHO ARE WE?
We are God’s creations – made and meant to live in faithful dependence. We are rebels. We are breakers. We are broken. We are sinful.
WHO IS GOD?
God is Holy. God is Perfect. God is Just. This doesn’t just mean that God doesn’t sin or make mistakes – it means that God cannot abide with sin.
4 For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with you. 5 The boastful shall not stand before your eyes; you hate all evildoers. 6 You destroy those who speak lies; the LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.
Psalm 5:4-6 (ESV)
Biggest issue in scripture is not how can a loving God allow suffering it is how can a holy God not punish sin?
JESUS CAME BECAUSE GOD HAS TO DEAL WITH SIN.
In the Abrahamic covenant we see that forgiveness is tied to faith in that “Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness.” In the Mosaic covenant God instituted a system of sacrifices that would be offered up by the priests for the people.Numbers 28 is a chapter that lists out the requirements of these sacrifices. It starts this way:
3 And you shall say to them, ‘This is the food offering that you shall offer to the Lord: two male lambs a year old without blemish, day by day, as a regular offering. 4 The one lamb you shall offer in the morning, and the other lamb you shall offer at twilight;
Numbers 28:3-4 (ESV)
Every day at morning and at twilight …the priest would sacrifice a lamb.
I read through Numbers 28 this week…..and I counted up all the sacrifices……the daily sacrifices, the Sabbath sacrifices, the monthly sacrifices and the special holy day sacrifices.
In one year they would sacrifice
1044 Lambs 101 Bulls 31 Rams 24 Goats
That is a lot of spilled blood…and this was the minimum….there were many other sin offerings that people would make.
God accepted the death of these animals as a sacrifice of faith. Without that faith…
11 “What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? says the Lord; I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of well-fed beasts; I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of goats. 12 “When you come to appear before me, who has required of you this trampling of my courts? 13 Bring no more vain offerings; incense is an abomination to me. New moon and Sabbath and the calling of convocations— I cannot endure iniquity and solemn assembly. 14 Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hates; they have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them. 15 When you spread out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood. 16 Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes; cease to do evil, 17 learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause. 18 “Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool. 19 If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land; 20 but if you refuse and rebel, you shall be eaten by the sword; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
Isaiah 1:11-20 (ESV)
JESUS CAME AS THE PERFECT AND FINAL ATONING SACRIFICE.
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
John 1:29 (ESV)
36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
John 3:36 (ESV)
JESUS CAME TO SAVE US FROM GOD.
5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
1 John 1:5-10 (ESV)
JESUS CAME AS THE PROPITIATION – HE COVERS AND CLEANSES.
1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.
1 John 2:1-2 (ESV)
JESUS CAME BECAUSE HE LOVES ALL.
